Leipzig City

We left Wittenberg and drove over to Leipzig to check it out.

Johann Sebastian Bach, considered one of the most influential composers of all time, was leader of the boys' choir here at the St. Thomas Church during his adult years from 1723 until 1750.

Johann stands outside the St. Thomas Church.  Behind him is a pipe organ, his favorite instrument.  He's holding a rolled-up sheet of music, which he used as a baton.

And so is Lynnette!

"The clean, white, stripped-down Neo-Gothic interior evokes the Protestant aesthetic of uncluttering the congregation's communion with God.  On Pentecost in 1539, Martin Luther came here to perform Leipzig's first Protestant service."  ... Rick Steves

The main alter comes from another church which was demolished by the communist regime in 19678.

In the foreground is Bach's tomb.  They are not really sure if Bach is really buried here.  "Largely unappreciated in his own time and forgotten shortly after his death, Bach was buried in a humble graveyard.  But after his music regained popularity in the 19th century, aficionados tracked down what they thought were his remains.  ... Rick Steves

Within town center is the Old Town Hall.  A city history museum is upstairs but we did not see it.  Downtown Leipzig was jumping and full of life.  I would like to have spent more time here.

Another look at the Old Town Hall

Outside Leipzig's oldest church (1165):  St. Nicholas Church.

The church rose to national fame in 1989 with the Monday Demonstrations when it became the centre of peaceful revolt against communist rule.

From 1989 to 1991, people gathered at St. Nicholas on Monday evenings, leading to spontaneous peaceful protests against the government. Cabaret artist Bernd-Lutz Lange said about the events which started in the St. Nicholas Church:  "There was no head of the revolution. The head was the Nikolaikirche and the body the centre of the city. There was only one leadership: Monday, 5 pm, St. Nicholas Church."
